The effects of machining properties, viz., sawing, planing, shaping, boring, mortising, turning and finishing on ten village tree species, mango (Mangifera indica), jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), neem (Azadirachta indica), ghora neem (Melia azadarach), raintree (Samanea saman), mandar (Erythrina orientalis), painya mandar (Erythrina fusca), babla (Acacia nilotica sub sp. indica), sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo), and tentul (Tamarindus indica), were studied. The sawing qualities were three categories, difficult, medium and easy to saw. In machining and handtools operation the evaluation was based on frequency of occurrence of defect-free samples. The defects were visually observed and the percentage of defect-free samples were determined. Finishing qualities were also evaluated with the application of three different types of polishing materials, viz., Shellac, carpa and epoxy. The results are of indicative value only and provides data of their potential suitability for certain uses.
