A sample survey was conducted on the rural sawmills of Bangladesh in 1984 to estimate the total number of sawmills, their annual production, total employment and average monthly wage of the workers. Since very few sawmills of Bangladesh run without electricity, only the electrified upazillas were included in the survey. Stratified random sampling method was used on the basis of the number of electrified upazillas, geographical locations and forest conditions. Results reveal that in 1984 there are 1032(+- 263) sawmills in the rural areas of Bangladesh producing 540,944 (+-136,206) cu.m. of sawtimber annually. The total manpower engaged in the sawmills was 6,171 (+-1388) with an average monthly wage of Tk. 630 (+-89). Most of the sawmills run at about 40% of their capacities. The paper also focusses the existing problems and probable prospects of the sawmilling industry in Bangladesh.
