Sodium ion, K+ and Cl- levels during germination were studied to compare the salinity tolerance of the following tomato cultivars: Platense, Platense linea 7, Platense linea 9, Platense J.J. Gomez and Triuque. The saline levels tested were 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 mM sodium chloride. Results indicate that Na+ and Cl- content increased with salt concentration in a similar way. Potassium content had constant values in the most salt tolerant cultivars Triuque and Platense J.J. Gomez, and its level increased with saline conditions in the other cultivars evaluated. Potassium ion would be a useful chemical indicator in the selection of salt tolerant tomato cultivars
