[Diuraphis noxia, potential vector of the barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV)]
1993
Ramirez M, Alejandro Leonel
A research was conducted between 1990-1991 at the Faculty of Agronomy, University of Concepcion, Chillan, in order to determine if the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia M., was capable of transmitting the barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). Non-viruliferous D. noxia were allowed to feed from wild oat plants collected in the field that showed typical symptoms of yellow dwarf, and then transferred to cultivated oats to inoculate the virus if they had acquired it. In order to verify if D. noxia had transmitted the virus, non-viruliferous R. padi and S. avenae were used on subsequent transmission tests, using the D. noxia inoculated oat plants as virus source. All the plants that were inoculated by means of aphids were serologically tested by DAS-ELISA against the PAV strain of BYDV. The results indicate that, under the conditions of our experiments, the Russian wheat aphid seems to transmit occasionally the PAV strain of BYDV
