1994
Vaarst, M.
Veterinary research activities regarding organic husbandry are described, and some of the results presented in these studies are mentioned. A Danish research project, "Disease Control in Organic Dairy Farms", is briefly presented regarding the framework, objectives and methods. The project is carried out in 14 organic dairy farms in connection with the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS). Based on data collected during the project period the udder health is considered to be extremely good, although a great variation within the group of organic herds is present. Consistent management routines, milking hygiene and immediate intervention in cases of mild clinical mastitis are mentioned among the reasons for the sound udder health obtained. The frequency of veterinary treatments is generally low. Among the health problems in some herds the following are mentioned: Milk fever, subclinical mastitis mainly caused by Staphylococcus aureus, calf diseases (diarrhoea and pneumonia) and digital disorders
