Miller, I. | Jaervis, T.
So far trichinellosis in domestic pigs has been diagnosed in Estonia, but some nidi in wild animals (Peebsen, 1966) and some cases of human invasion in 1969 and in 1985 have been registered. The human invasion was caused by the victims having consumed wild boar meat, which had not undergone any veterinary sanitary check. In the years of 1970-1979 an examination of 898 wild animals was carried out for trichinellosis. The animals under examination were raccoon dogs, foxes, badgers, pine martens, squirrels, lynxes, wolves, bears, polecats, black rats, minks and mouse. There were also 473 wild boars and 12 dogs and 47 cats among the wild animals examined. Trichinellosis had been diagnosed in wild animals in 11 rural districts out of the 13 districts studied. The percentage of invaded animals was 5,8%. Trichinella sp. larvae have been found in boars, raccoon dogs, fox, lynx, pine martens, wolves and cats. The degree of invasion intensity was high in raccoon dogs (invasion extent 23%) and cats. The degree of invasion intensity was low in wild boar. In the years of 1992-1993 an examination of wild animals (36) was pointed out for tendency of trichinellosis spread among wild boars. The method of digestion in artificial gastric juice is still more effective. It was found that in wild animals the diaphragm is not heavily invaded by trichinella. The most heavily invaded muscles were those of the tongue, the mastication and the muscles of the limbs
