Maize is one of the top major crop enterprises both as a staple food and cash generator for the small farmers. Consequently, it is one of the national commodity crop receiving substantial research and extension emphasis. The past research efforts were criticized for not improving the farmers productivity as the technologies developed were not applicable to the farmers' circumstances. This was due to less emphasis given to incorporation of information on farmers' circumstances in the design and development of new technologies. To reverse this trend the Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) adopted the Farming Systems Research (FSR) approach, to gather information on farmers circumstances to guide research programs. Maize is one of the crops which has been extensively studied. Thus, the objective of this paper is to synthesize the results of various diagnostic surveys conducted with regards to maize. Production practices and cropping systems, utilization, constraints and research needs for maize production in Ethiopia are reviewed.
