Brief survey is given of the biological importance of the 65 microelements. Due to changes in nutrition habits and in the methods of food manufacturing, processed food contains much less microelements than the raw materials. The Hungarian population is very badly supplied in respect of several elements. Examples are given to show the relationship between the civilization diseases and the correct concentration of some microelements of vital importance, as well as the immune system (e.g. statistical correlations have been found between the cholesterol level of blood, high blood pressure, tumorous diseases on the one hand, and the microelement status on the other).
