Regulation and timing of green bean irrigation with the aid of infrared remote thermometers

The growth development and yield of 4 green bean varieties were studied at 4 levels of water supply. Irrigation was carried out using sprinklers, with rates of 40 mm on each occasion. The foliage temperature of beans grown on plots with different water supplies was measured using remote thermometers from the closing of the foliage (the beginning of flowering) until harvesting. The foliage temperature is determined to the greatest extent by the air temperature, but it is also in close correlation with irridation and soil moisture. According to stand temperature data, the water supply of green beans is optimum when the soil moisture content is in excess of DV 50 %, since in this case the water requirement of the plants, which change each day depending on environmental factors, can fully be satisfied. At soil moisture levels of DV 25-50 %, the satisfaction of the water requirements depends on environmental conditions, while at levels below DV 25 % the soil moisture is unable to supply sufficient water for the bean stand except in extraordinary cases. If the temperature on the plant surface reaches 29-30 degrees C, irrigation is definitely justified
