The results of an experiment set up on a chernozem brown forest soil with an acidic pH and poor supplies of readily available P show that in a crop rotation there is no need to treat maize with a P fertilizer, no reduction was found in the grain, stalk or cob yields or in the P content of the grain. On the soil type examined, however, P fertilizer was well utilized by cereals, leading to a significant increase in yield, making its application justified
