1992

In large-scale experiments carried out in 1991, 13 of the 19 sunflower varieties tested gave yields in excess of 2.5 t/ha over the average of 11 growing sites. For 9 of these varieties, the average yield at 8-10 sites was 2.8-2.9 t/ha. The soil content of the varieties was 49-50 o/o, oil contents lower than 47.0 o/o were only found for 2 varieties (NSH-45 and Bonosus). The highest oil contents were obtained for X-2401 (51.8 o/o) and NSH-26 RM (51.5 o/o). The majority of varieties had achene masses of ca. 50 g, while that of 2 varieties was over 70 g (72 g for HN-24 and HN-23), and 5 had 1000-achene masses of ca. 40 g (NSH-26 RM, Viki, Bonosus, Barbara and S-2151). Among the fungal diseases, Sclerotinia and Alternaria caused the greatest o/o of inflorescence infection. The plant density was 47000 per ha with extreme values of 44-53 thousand, varieties with plant densities of less than 48000 per ha had average inflorescence diameter of 16.5-19.6 cm, while for varieties with greater plant densities this figure was 15.5-16.5 cm. The weight of seeds per inflorescence may be as much as 60 g or more for inflorescences with a diameter greater than 17 cm
