O. nubilalis has become a particular menace in the southern part of the Great Hungarian Plain, with 20-30 o/o of the plants being infected in some places. Biopreparations were tested in order to achieve environmentally sound control. Biobit WP significantly reduced the degree of infection. Especially in 1990 it was extremely efficient (91-95 o/o) against the larvae of the first generation. In all cases the higher rate (3.5 kg/ha) was required to give a substantial reduction in the number of larvae surviving in the second generation. Biobit XL had a similar effect on the extent of plant infection (74-78 o/o and 73-79 o/o). Here again the number of larvae surviving dropped when the higher rate (4 l/ha) was applied
