This study was conducted in two villages in Bogor (wet agroclimatic zone), at elevations of 300 m to 450 m above see level (asl) to evaluate the adoption rate of improved traditional sheep management and to find explanation whether there were certain alternative ways in which that process could be made more efficient. The first village was characterized by rubber plantation and the second village was characterized by ricefield agroecosystems. Ten cooperative farmers in each village were involved in this study, each of them raised five young ewes and one young ram. A package of improved traditional sheep management was introduced in 1988 using verbal and written materials, and biological performance responses were monitored periodically. The adoption evaluation was made using a proportional scoring production system with a total of 100 percent for the optimal profile. Very slow changes were found both in biological performance and adoption of technology introduced. This study suggested that the traditional systems should be reoriented towards commercial systems as an alternative to enhance the development of sheep production systems through action and participation of the producers in the industrialization process.
