The tendency of overtapping has been encountered in projects of smallholder rubber development. Such behaviour caused negative impact, not only reduced the economic life of the tree, but also fails the objectives of the long-term program of rubber development project. To overcome this, a research was done at two smallholder rubber development projects, ie. Nucleus Estate and Smallholder (NES) I Talang Jaya, South Sumatra and West Sumatra Smallholder Plantation Development Project (P3RSB) Abai Siat. The research was concentrated on the analysis of impact and loss of overtapping as well as the possibility of solution. Observations were also made on the factors influencing the behaviour of participant economy. The result showed that overtapping caused loss of materials about Rp.12.5 bilion at NES I Talang Jaya and Rp.9 bilion at P3RSB Abai Siat in one planting cycle (30 years). Economic life of the tree decreased by 6-13 years at NES I Talang Jaya and 2.3-10.5 years at P3RSB Abai Siat.
