Two types of approaches were used to determine if Diversity Index of Periphytic Algae and Water Quality Index can reliably indicate the water quality of Sungai Sunter. The first approach was to observe and analyse species composition and structure of several communities. In this study, several samples of periphytic algae were collected by artificial substrate method. The effect of pollutants can then be assessed using Shannon-Wiener's Diversity Index. The second approach was to analyse water quality using NSF WQI (National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Index). This index describes the effect of pollutant on 9 parameters of water quality. Based on the results of a Spearman Rank Correlation Test, it was concluded that there is positive correlation between Shannon-Wiener's Diversity Index and NSF WQI.
