1986
Swastika, D.K.S. (Balai Penelitian Tanaman Pangan Sukarami (Indonesia))
From 1980 to 1982, research was conducted on cropping system technology at the transmigration area at Sitiung II, Block E. The researchers from Sukarami Research Institute for Food Crops (SARIF) cooperated with 18 cooperator farmers to introduce upland cropping system technology. The purpose of this cropping system research was to find the best cropping pattern to increase the productivity of the farmer's resources. In 1985 and 1986 a survey was carried out to evaluate the impact of the introduced cropping system technology on other farmers around the research site. The components of technology that were evaluated were: fertilizer and pesticide application, soil and water conservation, liming, cropping index and farmer's income. The results of the study showed that 70 percent of the introduced technology has been adopted by the farmers. The component of technology that have been adopted are: terracing 100 percent, liming 100 percent, fertilizer application 26 percent, pesticide application 58 percent, and cropping index 65 percent. By these adoptions, the average farmer's income has been increased from Rp 110,028 in 1980 to Rp 423,056 in 1986. But these increases have not yet reached the government's target of US$ 1,500/family/year. The government's target may be reached if the government develops new programs such as nucleus estates with perennial crops
