Detection and identification of onion yellow dwarf virus in Iraq

Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV), the cause of harmful disease of onion (Allium spp.) was found and identified in Nivevah. The disease occurred, also on the above mentioned species, in Al-Hamdanyia, Al-Rashidyia, Al-Sahalalat, Bahshiqa, Aski-Mosiul, Hammam Al-Alil, Khurcibad and Sinjar, indicating wide spread of the disease. The virus was easily transmitted mechanically, causing severe stunting, chlorotic streaks along the leaf veins as also basal leaves become flaccid. The virus was identified on the bases of symptoms, host range, properties in crude juice and electronic microscopy. This is the first report on yellow dwarf virus in Iraq
