Storage temperature of seed bulbs and planting date influence on growth and yield of garlic [plant height; leaf number; neck diameter; secondary growth; bulb weight, size and number of cloves per bulb]

Effect of planting date, Oct., Nov., Dec. 1990 and Jan. 1991 and preplanting storage temperature of seed cloves (Room, 10 and 0 deg C) and growth and yield of Kisswani garlic cultivar were studied in the Jordan Valley (JV) and in Jubeiha during 1990/91 seasons. Emergence percent increased by delay planting to Dec. and by increasing storage temperature to room in JV, and by early planting in Oct. and Nov., while storage temperature had no significant effect on emergence percentage in Jubeiha. Vegetative growth, days to bulbing and days to maturity increased significantly by early planting in Oct. and by higher storage temperatures in both locations. Secondary growth percentage increased significantly by early planting in Oct. or Nov. and by decreasing storage temperature to 0 deg C in both locations. Yield bulb diameter and bulb weight were decreased significantly by delay planting from Oct. to Jan., and by decreasing pre-planting storage temperature from room or 10 deg C to 0 deg C. Higher yields of 1518 and 1871 kg/dunum were produced from Oct. and room storage temperature in the JV and Jubeiha location respectively, while the lowest yield was produced from later planting in Jan. at both locations. However, with later planting, seed cloves stored at 10 deg C produced higher yield, bulb diameter and bulb weight, than at other storage temperatures. Number of cloves per bulb increased significantly by early planting in Oct. and by decreasing storage temperature to 0 deg C in both locaions. Storage of seed cloves at 0 deg C was more favorable for early mature garic production but with lower yield and yield quality
