Ruiru 11, adoption and performance in the estate sector in Kenya

A survey of 140 coffee estates to evaluate adoption and performance trends of the new coffee arabica hybrid variety, Ruiru 11 showed an adoption level of 36% since variety's introduction in 1986. This was seen to vary with estate location, size and level of production technology used. Plant density and level of production technology used were also seen to influence Ruiru 11 yields which was 70% to 100% higher than traditional varieties. Highlights farm level advantages, disadvantages and constraints hindering adoption of the variety. Capital investment and the national implications of the variety's continued adoption are also discussed
