The sugarbeet cultivar, "Monohikari", and its parents were developed at the Hokkaido National Agricultural Experiment Station, Sapporo, Japan. "Monohikari" was registered and publicly reported as "Sugarbeet Norin Hybrid No.10", and the pollinator parent, "NK-152", as "Sugarbeet Norin Hybrid Parent No.11" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery of Japan in 1982. "Monohikari" is a diploid hybrid developed from a single cross between a diploid monogerm malesterile line, "TK-76-49/2mm", as seed parent; and a diploid multigerm line, "NK-152, as pollinator parent. A unique pair cross method created at the Hokkaido National Agricultural Experiment station was used to develop parents from the diploid monogerm line, "TK-76mm", of U.S. origin and from the diploid multigerm line, "TK-129", of European origin. The agronomic characteristics of "Monohikari" are summarized as follows: 1) Productivity: High sugar yield because of high sugar content, despite high root weight. A small decrease of sugar content under high nitrogen conditions. 2) Quality: High processing quality because of low content of amino-N, sodium, and potassium. High sugar recovery in processing. 3) Beet top Characteristics: High plant height, but low top weight because of small crown. 4) Bolting Resistance: Poor bolting resistance. Tendency to bolt in cool regions or in cool years, especially under transplanting growing conditions. 5) disease and Insect Resistance: Resistant to Cercospora leaf spot and slightly resistant to Rhizomania. Susceptible to Rhizoctonia root rot, bacterial blight and Colletotrichum dematium. 6) Seed Productivity: Somewhat low seed productivity. No problems with commercial seed production
