Classification of Japanese red kerneled rice varieties of Indica type [Oryza sativa] on their heading responces [in Japan]

The basic vegetative growth of six Japanese red kerneled rice varieties of Indica type was determined from the period between the seeding date of November 11 and the heading date under pot cultivation in the phytotron maintained at day and night temperatures of 30 and 25 degrees C, respectively. The photosensitivity was determined by the difference in the number of days to heading of plants seeded on May 11 and November 11. Their thermosensitivity was also determined by the difference in the number of days to heading of plants seeded in May and November between treatments of high and low temperature. Six varieties were classified into two groups by cluster analysis. The first group, which included two tested varieties and three Japanese check cultivars, had short basic vegetative growth and high photosensitivity. The second group, which included four tested varieties and three Japanese check cultivars, had long basic vegetative growth and low photosensitivity. Check cultivars from other Asian countries were obviously distinguished from Japanese red kerneled and check cultivars with their extremely long basic vegetative growth
