Studies were carried out in non-breeding season with three ovariectomized and four intact sheep in order to test the physiological reactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. It was found that following three-hold injections with GnRH (250 ng, 250 ng and 40 ug) at 2-hours intervals an immediate rise of the LH in the peripheral blood followed, tending to increase further with each injection. The concentration of LH after treatment with 17-betaestradiol in a dose of 20 ug showed an initial decrease for a period up to 8-12 hours, followed by a peak between 12-24 hours after the treatment with estradiol. A single injection of gonadotropin (1000 IU, Gestil) caused a gradual increase in the blood concentration of estradiol, reaching it's maximum at the 18 hour following the injection, while the ovariectomized animals did not show any essential changes in the course of the experimental period. The treatment schedule used in this study can be used for the evaluation of the reactivity of the hypotalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis in ewe
