Preliminary investigation of fish species potentials of Imo River in Nigeria

The ichthyofauna of Imo River was sampled for a period of nine months. The total fish specimen caught was 1.433 which comprised 16 families, 33 genera and 61 species. Chrysichthys furcatus was the highest in number and in terms of total weight. Heterotis niloticus was the highest in mean weight and second in mean length. The fish potentials compared favourably with larger rivers like Niger
