Control of Plutella xylostella on cabbage by Bacillus thuringiensis BT22

An isolate of Bacillus thuringiensis Kurstaki, designated as BT22, was found to be the most effective against the larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. among 22 isolates treated in laboratory bioassay. The values for median lethal time (LT50) of BT22 and the commercial strain, HD-1, were calculated as 12.3h and 14.4h, respectively. The crude wettable powder formulation of BT22 effectively controlled P. xylostella in a field trial on cabbage. BT22-treated plots yielded an average of 21.6 tons/ha of marketable heads, which was three times higher than the yield of Bactospeine-treated plots. In another trial, cabbage plots treated with BT22 wettable powder or flowable formulation yielded more than 20 tons/ha of marketable head, which was statistically comparable with the yield of Dipel-treated plots (27.6 tons/ha) and significantly higher than Bactospeine-treated plots (14.4 tons/ha). The rate of application of Bt22 used however, was lower than those of the commercial formulations, Dipel and Bactospeine
