Biological control of Pseudomonas solanacearum E.F. Smith causing bacterial wilt in tomato and seed-borne fungi of corn using Bacillus spp.

Corpuz, J.S.
In vitro test showed that the Bacillus spp. assayed were antagonistic against Pseudomonas solanacearum (Biovars 3 and 4) from tomato based on their zones of inhibition after 48 hours using the paper disc method. Inhibition zones ranged from 2.0 mm to 23.2 mm. In addition, antagonistic reactions were observed on seed-borne and storage fungi of corn in in vitro test. Bacillus megatarium, Bacillus 4, 6 and 1461 proved to be the most effective isolates which were comparable to 10 ppm benlate. Mean diameter inhibition zones range from 3.2 mm to 27.2 mm. Moreover, aflatoxin reduction was observed on Bacillus 4-inoculated YES broth flasks after 10 days of incubation at 28-30 deg C by thin layer chromatography. TLC tests revealed that the protectant (2 days before) and therapeutant (2 days after) treatments showed no blue fluorescence under longwave UV light at 366 nm compared to the controls of A. flavus and A. parasiticus which produced 6 and 30 ppb aflatoxin B1, respectively
