Production impact of pesticide use on rice in Hau Giang Province, Viet Nam
1993
Le Quang Thong
The results of this study showed that pesticide is widely used in sample site. The average amount of pesticide used on rice production is still high. Both production function and profit function approaches were employed to analyze and evaluate the efficiency of pesticide use. The possible impact of pesticide on rice yield was investigated by using production function approach in Cobb-Douglas production function form. The Unit Output Price profit function was used to compute the impact of pesticide on profitability. Data was derived from the Viet Nam benchmark survey conducted by IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] since 1989 to 1992. Two districts in Hau Giang Province were chosen as the sample site with 3 villages. The estimation and evaluation were computed for both wet season and dry season since 1989-1991. When the negative effects of pesticide are ignored, pesticide application helps farmers to yield higher profit, especially with the use of herbicide in weeding. It gives a relative economic efficiency on rice production
