Survey of iron and boron status and study of the effects of boron supplementation on growth and tuber yield of two potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum L.)
1993
Beyene, S.A.
Results of the two field experiments showed that boron contents of the soils were very low (3.5 ppm at Lengaoan and 3.2 ppm at Buga) compared to average values for many soils (17 ppm.). Leaf boron contents were significantly increased in both cultivars. Contents increased from 5.7 (control) to 11.4 ppm for the highest concentration in cv. Conchita. In Granola, leaf boron content increased from 6.3 to 12.4 ppm, respectively. Plant height of cv. Granola was also significantly improved with the increase in boron concentration sprayed. Application of boron fertilizer significantly increased both marketable and total tuber yields of cv. Granola but not of Conchita at the highest level of concentration. A yield difference of up to 6 tons/ha was observed between the control and the highest level of boron fertilizer in both marketable and total tuber yields. Supplementation of boron fertilizer to potato cv. Granola is hence beneficial in improving plant growth and tuber yield in farmer's fields
