Activity of the seed formation, process as related to the pod position on the plant, on seed size and distribution of assimilates between plant organs has been studied on 27 varieties of grain and grain-mowed breeding trend. It has been shown that the seed producing capacity of grain varieties as compared to grain-mowed ones was connected with the formation of larger seeds on them and with a low vegetative organs' weight/seed weight ratio. The decrease of this index on the upper productive nodes in determined by the weight of seeds developed on the lower nodes. Cultivar variability for the seed filling speaks for the possibility to increase the seed yielding capacity of pea plants in the breeding process
