Varietal differences in saponin and protein contents and relations between them in alfalfa
1992
Macuha, P. (Vyskumny Ustav Rastlinnej Vyroby, Piestany (Slovak Republic))
In 1989-1990 at the Research Institute of Plant Production in Piestany there was founded the small-plot trial with 16 varieties of alfalfa. Their contents of proteins and saponins were determined. The varietal differences in contents of these substances and relations between them and to the crops were studied. The low saponin content was found in less productive varieties as well as in more productive varieties. Between the contents of protein and saponin (in some cases) a slight negative effect at the analysis of leaves and stalks was found. The varietal differences are insignificant as to the protein content, but as to the saponin content (particularly) in leaves, that influences the quality of alfalfa biomass, they are significant
