Aquatic ecological studies of the Bang Pakong River [Thailand] and the assessment of impacts from Bang Pakong thermal power plant (phase 2)

Water salinity in the river was increased to 29.5 ppt during the period of December to May and decreased to normal level during June to November. Water temperature, pH and turbidity of the river were also changed according to seasonal variation. About 11 phylum and 37 species of zooplankton was observed at various sampling stations. Zooplankton in Phylum Arthropoda was the most abundance group about 70 to 90 % of the total plankton observed. Zooplankton abundance in the upper stations above Thermal Power Plant was lowered than zooplankton in the lower sampling station. Abundance of zooplankton was statistically different between each month of sampling. Number of zooplankton in the upper sampling stations above the Power Plant was decreased to about 47 and 69 % of the amount observed in 1982. The safe concentration of chlorine to aquatic organisms should not be higher than 0.2 mg/L which is lower than the effluent standard set by Ministry of Industry at 1.0 mg/L. Bang Pakong Thermal Power Plant may have some impacts on the abundance of zooplankton in the upper section of Bang Pakong river which in turn may affect the fish production in the river.
