In recent years the number and scale of impoundment of mangrove area for aquaculture ponds has increased rapidly. This is party due to the lower cost and the easier to manage of the auqaculture ponds in the areas. However, such aquaculture operators have significant adverse effects on the mangrove ecosystem as well as its adjacent coastal ecosystem. It is the objective of this report to discuss the present situation of aquaculture in mangrove areas and to try to assess the impacts arising from such utilization within the frame-work of scientific as well as social and economic constraints. Management options and potential for implementation of conservation management strategies will be evaluated in terms of existing patterns of legislation and goverment organization. Finally, recommendations for better management of aquaculture activities in the mangroves will be made.
