Cause of aflatoxin in corn

Aflatoxin in corn is produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus which are yellow-green, wild type molds. A. flavus produces B1 and B2 toxins, while A. parasiticus produces G1 and G2. In Thailand most of the toxin is B1 type. Several factors effect the production of the toxin, i.e. fungus strain, insect damage, seed moisture content, plant water stress and corn variety. A. flavus produces sclerotium as primary inoculum to attack the silk of the corn. The subsequent seed formed is already infected and the amount of toxin accumulates during seed storage.
