1990
Geert Anthonis (Maejo Inst. of Agricultural Technology, Chiang Mai (Thailand))
Fresh and dry matter (DM per 100 kg live weight) intake of sweet potato leaves, pigeon pea, gliricidia, ruzi grass and water hyacinth were determined with sheep. Sweet potato leaves were found to be a great favorite of the sheep. Fresh water hyacinth was also consumed in big quantities but only to make up for its lack in DM. Gliricidia, which has a very high protein content, was at first not eaten at all and only when the sheep became very hungry they started to eat it. Together with sweet potato leaves ruzi grass and pigeon pea are now being included in an experiment to determine their biomass production and will in future be included in other experiments because they show the most promising results so far.
