No-tillage system for corn (Zea mays L.)

The two methods of seedbed preparation, conventional versus no-tillage, and N-fertilizer requirement for corn (Zea mays L.) grown on Pak Chong soil were investigated at Farm Suwan beginning in 1984. Results from the first year experiment showed that neither growth and grain yield nor N-fertilizer response characteristics differed markedly under these two tillage systems. These behaviors were attributed to the relatively uniform distribution of rains with a short-term drought period only in the early vegetative growth stage and the high fertility status of the soil. Nonetheless, greater water conservation in the top 30-cm soil layer and higher water use efficiency were found associated with the no-tillage practice. The use of N-fertilizer also resulted in higher water use efficiency of the corn plant for both cultivation system.
