Uganda: A study of agricultural information needs
1993
Abidi, S.A.H. (Makerere University, Kampala (Uganda). East African School of Librarianship)
A study of Uganda's agricultural information needs showed that the information infrastructure is still having serious setbacks with most Libraries and Documentation Units lacking in funding to subscribe for books, journals and equipment ie computers, as well as trained information personnel to run them. The agricultural research-extension-farmer linkage is still weak. However, institutions for handling agricultural information eg. The National Agricultural Documentation and Information Centre (NADIC) and The Agricultural Communication Centre (ACC) exist but need strengthening. NADIC has possibilities of further expansion under the newly established National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO). This would facilitate proper networking and resource sharing with Agricultural Institutions both within and outside Uganda. The existing Institutions enjoy political backing. Government gives top priority to agriculture as the national economy largely depends on it, as such, efforts to stengthen agricultural information are encouraged and would go a long way in creating an independent, integrated and selfsustaining national economy
