Soil fertility management by small holder farmers: a participatory rapid appraisal in Chivi and Mangwende communal areas, Zimbabwe
1993
In line with current global thinking on the need to bring farmers more to the fore-front in agricultural research methodology to set up a research, the Farming Systems Research Unit decided to employ the farmer participatory research methodology to set up a research programme. The paper discusses the range of materials used for soil fertility management; the farmers' understanding of the fertility properties of various soils in their environment; the socio-economic circumstances in communal areas and their bearing on soil fertility management practices and the soil fertility management problems inhibiting increased crop production as perceived by farmers. It also describes the methods employed and the outcomes, the procedures were group meetings, walking of transects, wealth ranking followed by household interviews and then finally farmer's workshops to arrive at a research agenda
