Selection with the emphasis on cow efficiency
1993
Bosman, D.J. (Animal and Dairy Science Research Institute, Irene (South Africa))
The paper states that in order to improve the efficiency of calf production it is necessary to identify the cows producing the greatest output on the least input. It is evident from the data presented that efficient cows are: found in all sizes and weaning index is a better measure of cow efficiency index, which is biased toward smaller cows; those that calve regularly, preferably every year, reproduction is 10 times more important than other traits, in terms of biological and economic efficiency. Much more attention should be given to production and less attention to size. Efficient cows calve easily and are in all respects functionally efficient in terms of visual traits. Efficient cows are those that are adapted to suit the particular environment. Proper grazing management and efficient disease control are important factors in an efficient cattle enterprise
