The establishment and use of bana grass as a bulk fodder for milk and beef production
1991
Schlachter, B. (Zimbabwe Fertilizer Company, Harare (Zimbabwe))
The paper presents the use of Bana grass as fodder for milk and beef production. With shrinking margins and escalating stockfeed costs, many local producers are looking to Bana grass to produce a reliable source of fodder. Bana grass is able, under various systems, to produce a large mass of cheap and in some cases very high quality roughage. The benefit derived from the crop is proportional to the management it gets. Bana grass does not produce a viable seed, it will try to produce a seed head but there is nothing viable in it. So propagation has to be either from roots or by truncheon. The paper also discusses the production of the grass starting from land preparation; soil analysis; planting; irrigation; spacings; fertilizer application; weed control; management of the grass; nutritive value and palatability; other factors affecting nutrient levels and expected yields
