Contribution of the pericarp of maize genotypes to resistance to the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (motsch.)

Damaging or removing the maize kernels in 22 maize genotypes increased their susceptibility to maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais (motsch)) attack. The genotypes exihibited a wide range of susceptibilities to maize weevil infestations as indicated by the number of insects that developed and grain weight losses. The high mortality of adults on undamaged kernels in resistant genotypes and the increase in insect development and grain weight losses after damaging or removing the pericarp indicate that the pericarp plays an important role in resistance
