Strategies to combat drought through irrigation development techniques for sustainable agricultural production

Smallholder irrigation is discussed, it is realised that it is cheaper to provide a means for food production for the people through irrigation than to feed them on drought relief packages. Issues discussed are: problems facing irrigation development in Zimbabwe; irrigation efficiency in relation to irrigation development; extension - the missing link in small scale irrigation schemes; individual farmer realization - a strategy for sustained production in irrigation development; the potential contribution of post harvest systems to improve viability sustainability of irrigation schemes and the need to build managerial capacity in preparation for total handover of scheme management to farmers
