Land evaluation concepts proposed by the FAO (1976, 1983) and Sys (1978, 1985) have been adapted for the Basin of the Zaire and have given satisfactory results. The general land evaluation of the Central Basin of the Zaire has shown that it is marginally unsuitable to unsuitable for maize, moderately to marginally suitable for rice, banana and cassava, suitable to moderately suitable for rubber, moderately suitable for oil palm and robusta coffee. The area surrounding the Central Basin is marginally suitable for oil palm and rubber, moderately to marginally suitable for rice, maize and banana and suitable for cassava. Examination of pedological properties has shown that the main limiting factor for annual and biennial crops is the low chemical fertility. Low rainfall in the surrounding area limits the suitability for perennial crops. The Geographic Information System (GIS) ARC/INFO was of help in the preparation of suitability maps.
