Acidity of colostrum and its influence on the health of calves
1995
Kavak, A.
To estimate acidity of colostrum and its relationship with metabolizable disorders and mortality in newborns calves, this investigation was carried out in 1979...1989. At the same time the efficacy of 15 treatments for healing of calves was tested. From the investigation the following conclusions can be drawn. Colostrum was of normal acidity (50 deg T or less) by 40.7 per cent cows investigated in 11 years. About 20 per cent samples had acidity 61 deg T or more. In most years in summer there were more samples with normal acidity than in winter. It could depend on the unbalanced winter feeding of cows. The mortality of calves depend on the acidity of colostrum. In case of normal acidity (under 50 deg T) it was 3,9 per cent, by acidity 61 deg T and more - 19.2 per cent. Colostrum with acidity above 60 deg T is for newborn calves dangerous. For its neutralization solutions of electrolytes and sodium bicarbonate are recommended. Adding boiled water to colostrum is also suitable
