[Establishment of pheasant farming for hunting purposes]
1994
Saveli, M. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Inst. of Animal Husbandry)
Pheasant breeding could be well re-established in Estonia. The first half of this paper provides an overview of the pheasant's natural range and behaviour, the various breeds of pheasant and the feasibility of pheasant farming. The second half of the paper details the planning of a pheasant farm with 500 breeds. The zootechnical methods used are of a low labour intensity, yet produce comparable results to methods which reproduce the pheasants' natural breeding conditions. Under farm conditions, each female pheasant will yield on average 30 fertilized eggs per year of which 70 per cent will be successfully hatced.
