Use of different methods for assessing the susceptibility of potato tubers to bacterial soft rot
1990
Koppel, M. (Estonian Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Saku (Estonia))
The susceptibility of tubers of 5 potato cultivars to bacterial soft rot caused by Erwinia carotovora var. atroseptica was assessed by 5 methods, on 8 different dates during the storage period. I method. Two wounds made in tuber slices, were allowed to heal 6 hours before inoculation with bacterium. II method. Slices were allowed to heal 6 hours before wounding and inoculation. III method. Inoculation was made just after slicing and wounding. IV method. Vacuum infiltration of whole tubers. V method. Whole tubers inoculated at wounds. Different methods gave completely contrasting results. Some assessments showed, that cultivar was more resistant to soft rot, others showed, that the same cultivar was more susceptible
