To improve the establishment and accordingly the yield of middle and basal portions and to study the effect of pre-rooting for replanting, the three portions of sweet potato vines pre-rooted for 0, 3, 6 and 9 days were evaluated at Awasa Research Center. Cuttings from top, middle and basal were made to initiate root by burying about two-third of their length in the moist soil under tree shade. Number of plant established and root yield were noted. Plant establishment was affected by parts of cutting and pre-rooting (P less than 0.05). The highest number of plant established was obtained from the top portion and vines pre-rooted for six days before planting. Root yield was also highly affected by vine pre-rooting (P less than 0.05). The highest root yield was obtained from vines pre-rooted for six days. It is concluded that by pre-rooting vines for six days plant establishment and root yield of sweet potato can be improved.
