Some Productive and Reproductive Performances of Horro Cattle at Bako Research Center

The productive and reproductive performances of indigenous Horo cattle were recorded at Bako Research Center from 1977 to 1990. The birth weights that averaged 18.6 plus or minus 0.2 kg were not significantly different between males and females. Body weights increased steadily from birth to three years of age when they average 192.4 plus or minus 6.0 kg., also still without any significant differences between males and females. Thereafter, bulls grew at a signifiantly faster rate than cows. Early mortality until 98 days of age (average 12 percent) was not significantly different between males and females. At first heat, age was 38.34 plus or minus 8.47 months and mean body weight 214.92 plus or minus 41.44 kg. At first conception age was 46.3 plus or minus 8.9 months and mean body weight 215 plus or minus 3.6 kg. At first calving age was 55.25 plus or minus 8.9 months and gestation length 282.21 plus or minus 5.86 days. Calving interval was 14.50 plus or minus 2.90 months. The number of artificial insemination (AI) services per conception was 1.75 plus or minus 1.08 and natural services per conception 1.33 plus or minus 0.76. The average lactation milk yield was 508.88 plus or minus 341.37 kg, with a daily average of 2.41 kg. The mean lactation length was 229.82 plus or minus 74.79 days and the mean fat 6.35 plus or minus 0.15 percent and protein percentage 3.89 plus or minus 0.06 percent.
