Plant Quarantine: Background and Potential Poblems of Food Grain Introduction

Food grains imported from different countries such as France, USA, Switzerland, Sweden, Canada, other European countries and USSR have been inspected carefully at point of arrivals. Quite a large number of different weed seeds were intercepted which otherwise could cause problems because of their toxic properties of their extremely aggressive characteristics. Among these, Cirsium arvense, Ipomoea purpurea and Amaranthus retroflexus are considered serious weeds whose eradication would be difficult once they were established. Acting in response to this threat of foreign weed imports, infested food grain which had already arrived at Dire Dawa quarantine post has been cleaned and the contaminants destroyed by burning and milling. Although this method is the first line of defence and is most important, it does have certain limitations to prevent the introduction of all weeds.
