In 1831 Dumas, and in 1883 Kjeldahl published a method for the determination of the protein content. Both methods are based on the determination of the N-content of proteins. In the biochemical practice the Kjeldahl method is used for the determination of the protein content. Owing to the applied chemicals (oxidizing agents, catalyzers), this long-lasting process in harmful to both the environment and the health. During the recent 5 years several instrument manufacturing companies (Leco, Perkin-Elmer, Fisons Instrument) have put on the market automatic protein detectors operating on the basis of Dumas' combustion process. This method makes it possible to determine the protein content in 3-5 minutes, practically without chemicals, measuring the quantity of nitrogen released during the incineration of the protein. The authors review the LECO FP-428 protein detector and their experiences gained therewith
