1994
Yoder, R. (Associates in Rural Development, Burlington (USA))
As part of a larger assessment of the potential for expanding food productivity by assisting existing farmer-managed irrigation systems, a year-long study was made of one of the larger systems in Nepal, the Chhattis Mauja Irrigation System. This report examines the historical development of the system, the current organization for managing its operation and maintenance, the irrigation activities observed during field work, the system-level and national-level goals and the procedures for canal desilting and emergency repairs, and reviews the findings of the performance analysis. It investigates the internal processes of the system and the methods adopted to improve its effectiveness. Further, it addresses the question of gaining farmer acceptance in reallocating irrigation to allow expansion of the areas irrigated.
