The meiotic chromosomal behavior of Luffa cylindrica acc. 8701, Luffa acutangula var. Magiting, their F1 hybrid, F2 and BC1 progenies were analyzed and correlated with their respective pollen fertilities. The haploid number thirteen (n = 13), high univalent formation and non-congression of chromosomes were observed in all populations. Trivalent/quadrivalent formation, early disjunction of homologous chromosomes and sister chromatids, non-synchronous alignment of the chromosomes at the daughter nuclei and unequal chromosome distribution were noted only in the F1, F2, and BC1 hybrid populations. High pollen fertility was observed in the parental species, whereas the hybrid populations exhibited lower frequencies. Cryptic structural differences between the chromosomes of L. cylindrica and L. acutangula are indicated but their genomes can still be considered closely related
